Online focus
How to prepare for an online focus session
An online focus session puts time aside for your own work, with a host and other people working alongside you. A little preparation makes it easier to use that time deliberately.
Choose a result you can recognise
Bring one main task and a smaller backup task. Make the main one specific enough that you can tell whether it has moved forward: draft a proposal, organise a set of notes or complete a particular application.
If the task is too large for one session, choose a first milestone. For example, gathering the information for a proposal is a useful result even if the final document will take another day. Avoid filling your plan with so many tasks that choosing between them becomes its own distraction.
Prepare your tools before the start
Check your internet connection, charge your device and open the documents you need. Close unrelated tabs and put your phone somewhere you will not reach for it automatically. Keep water and any notes nearby.
Choose a place where you can work comfortably and follow the joining instructions for your session. Do not assume you will need to share your screen or disclose private work. If you have a question about joining arrangements, ask before the start rather than waiting until you are trying to connect.
Use check-ins to make the next step clear
At the opening check-in, describe what you are working towards in a sentence. “I’m outlining the first three sections” is easier to return to than a broad promise to be productive. When you get stuck, identify the smallest action you can take next.
During a break, step away from the task if you can. On returning, look at the intention you wrote down before opening a new tab. At the end, record what changed and what remains. Partial progress is still useful information for planning the next session.
